Toronto, ON – Along with raising the minimum wage to $15 in 2019, the Ontario government is on the right track to creating better working conditions through its proposed changes to the province’s labour and employment laws, according to the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO).
“Proposals to guarantee equal pay for equal work regardless of full-time, part-time or temporary status, increase annual paid vacations, provide 10 days of emergency leave and modernize rules around creating unions sound promising,” said ETFO President Sam Hammond. “We need to see draft legislation on these and other issues to ensure that the desire outcomes advocated by the labour movement are achieved.”
“Raising the minimum wage to $15 by 2019 is a win for labour, community organizations and the Fight for $15 And Fairness group, all of whom have engaged in a massive advocacy campaign to achieve this goal on behalf of working people, especially the poor and most vulnerable.”
“As for the eventual legislation, we need to keep in mind that the government is going into an election year and there will be pressures to mitigate legislative requirements on employers. The Ontario Federation of Labour and its member unions will actively engage with MPPs and the government to ensure that the eventual legislation delivers stability and fairness for Ontario workers,” added Hammond.
